Black Diamond® Crimson Crown™ Crape Myrtle Shrub
The Black Diamond® Crimson Crown™ Crape Myrtle Tree features dark black foliage and bright red blooms, making it an attractive focal plant. Grow one today!
1. Planting: Choose a location that receives full sunlight. Black Diamond® Crape Myrtle Shrubs must receive 6-8 hours of sunlight a day to maintain their black foliage. If planted in partial shade, the color of the foliage will be greener.
Mix compost into your soil and then dig a hole twice the size of the tree’s container. Remove the tree from the container and place it into the hole. Hold the stem straight as you fill the hole with the soil.
Add a layer of mulch to help conserve water and suppress weeds, making sure the mulch does not touch the base and stem of the tree.
2. Watering: Water the tree often and deeply until well established, approximately every other day for one month. Black Diamond® Crape Myrtle Shrubs are drought-tolerant and require minimal supplemental watering once established.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering shrubs.
4. Pruning: Prune sparingly to help shape the tree and encourage branching. If the tree is not leafing out in the spring, it may have experienced winter kill. In this case, prune back until you see green growth, and it will bush out again.
